My Grandpa's Funeral Service

My Grandfather's Death

On the 2nd of January, 2021 my Grandpa Tim Wesselowski passed away at the age of 80 years old. He had contracted COVID-19 in the month before and died as a result of the accompanying pneumonia. Unlike many who met the same fate in the last year, he did not die alone. My Uncle Nathan was by his side and my Mom was on speaker phone. My Uncle had spent the prior day with him doing one of his favorite things: watching football with family.

Isaac Van Wart: Shoemaker, Father of 11, and Patriot

Today's post will tell the story of my 7th great grandfather, Isaac Van Wart. Before I begin I would like to preface that this is not the Isaac Van Wart who captured Major John Andre during the Revolutionary War (although they are related). This Isaac, like many others, was one of the revolutionary war veterans who weren't honored with a section in the history books, but whose sacrifices should not be forgotten.

Throughout records he is most commonly known as Isaac Van Wart (1) and is sometimes also referred to as Isaac Van Waert (2). Isaac was born in about 1750 (3) to his parents Abraham Van Wart (2)(11) and Anna Maria May (12). On the 13th of April, 1751, he was baptized in the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow in North Tarrytown, New York (2).

Upon reaching adulthood Isaac began working in the cordwainer trade (8), crafting shoes out of leather (8).

In the year 1777 Isaac, unmarried and just 27 years old, was commissioned as a 1st Lieut. in Capt. Jacob Wright, Company in the late Philip V Cortland Regiment, on the continental Establishment in which company and regiment he served as Lieut. from that time until the spring of the year 1780, when he retired from the service of the revolutionary war (5). During his service he was engaged in the battles of St. John's, Quebec, White Plains, Hackensack Bridge, Saratoga, Monmouth, and Stony Point (18).

The Mysterious Origins of William Smith: A Tale of an Insane Irish Man

Nearly every family has one; a seemingly-eccentric-nutter-turned-black-sheep. The ancestor who lived under a guise of normalcy for years until a seemingly insignificant event turned them sour. On the Van Wert side of my family, this person is the Irish born William Smith, my 4th great grandfather by the following line:

What in the world is a Wesselowski?(And solving a Mystery)

Julius Wesselowski
The Wesselowski family name is one that is carried by only a lucky few. In fact, only about 37 people in the world can call it their own. This is largely due to a German family choosing an alternate spelling from the slightly more common 'Wesselowsky', and a man named Julius Wesselowski being one of the only members of that family to have sons. Then there is the fact that many Wesselowskis chose to change their last name to one of two variants: "Wessley" or "West". My maternal grandpa is just one of the ~37 with the surname. However, whether or not Wesselowski was my grandpa's family's true surname has long been debated. Thanks to DNA, however, those rumors have come to their conclusion. This post will tell the full story of the Wesselowskis, their families, and the genetic findings that changed my personal family history.
